Traveling as a Couple

The Power of Traveling as a Couple (With or Without Kids at Home)

Whether you’ve got little ones running around or you’re child-free and ready for adventure, traveling as a couple is one of the best things you can do for your relationship. It’s not just about relaxing—it’s about reconnecting, rediscovering each other, and growing together.

If You Have Kids—Support Makes It Possible

Let’s start with this: if you’re lucky enough to have grandparents, close friends, or trusted relatives who are willing to babysit while you get away—you’ve got gold. A solid support system makes it possible to plan time for just the two of you, knowing your kids are safe and loved.

Even if it’s just for a weekend, the time away can help you remember who you are beyond “Mom” and “Dad.” You get to be partners again. People who flirt, sleep in, share a meal without cutting anyone’s food, and maybe even finish a full sentence.

If You Don’t Have Kids—Travel Freely and With Intention

Couples without children often have more flexibility to travel when and where they want—but don’t take that for granted. Use it to build experiences that reflect what you both value: learning, adventure, rest, or romance. Whether you’re newly dating or long-time partners, travel helps deepen your understanding of one another and creates a strong foundation for the future.

Why Traveling Together Is So Good for Couples

Whether you’re parenting together or not, traveling as a couple has a long list of benefits:

  • It brings you closer. Exploring new places together sparks joy, wonder, and connection.

  • It strengthens your teamwork. From booking the flight to navigating new cities, every step is a chance to problem-solve and support each other.

  • It allows you to focus on each other. With fewer distractions, you get time to laugh, talk, reflect, and just be.

  • It builds trust and understanding. You see each other in different lights—sometimes sweaty and lost, sometimes totally at peace. All of it makes you stronger.

Move Together, Grow Together

Doing physical activities as a couple—hiking, paddleboarding, dancing, biking—helps you connect through movement and teamwork. Choose things you both feel comfortable trying. When both partners are engaged and having fun, it builds trust and keeps things light-hearted.

Bonus Tip for Parents: If you’re traveling with your children but want to sneak in couple time, try:

  • Using the resort or cruise kids’ club

  • Signing up for a museum or theme park day camp

  • Booking a vetted babysitter or nanny from a service like Care.com

  • Trading babysitting time with another family you trust

Long Weekend or Full Week? Let’s Compare

🌿 Long Weekend Getaways

  • ✅ Less time away from kids or work

  • ✅ Easier to plan and budget

  • ❌ Limited time to fully unplug

🌍 Week-Long Immersion Trips

  • ✅ More opportunity for deeper connection

  • ✅ Can include cultural experiences, classes, or adventure activities

  • ❌ Requires more childcare (if applicable) and coordination

Both styles work—it just depends on your life season and travel goals.

Discover Something New Together

One of the most powerful things you can do as a couple—especially over time—is to explore new things together. That might be trying Moroccan street food, learning to tango in Argentina, or finally checking off that hike you’ve both dreamed of.

When you discover together, you grow together.

When I Plan Couple Trips...

I always include:

  • ✨ Something thrilling – like kayaking, zip lining, or dancing outdoors.
Why? Thrilling activities give you both a little adrenaline rush and remind you how fun it is to be playful and brave together. They break routine, boost energy, and make for unforgettable moments (and lots of laughs).

  • 🌍 Something unique – like a sunrise hike, an outdoor movie under the stars, or a local food tour.
Why? Doing something you can’t do back home makes the trip feel truly special. These one-of-a-kind experiences create shared memories that you’ll talk about for years to come.

  • 🧠 Something educational – like a museum visit, a hands-on cooking class, or a cultural walking tour.
Why? Learning together sparks great conversations, keeps your brains engaged, and gives you both a chance to grow—individually and as a couple. It’s bonding with a side of curiosity!

These experiences create shared memories and build a strong emotional connection that lasts far beyond the trip.

Final Thoughts: Travel Isn’t an Escape—It’s a Reset

Whether you’re traveling as a couple with kids or without, the time you spend away together is an investment in your relationship. It’s how you make space for love, friendship, and growth.

You’ll come home with better stories, deeper appreciation, and maybe a few new inside jokes. And isn’t that what it’s all about?
